Welcome to Module 3

Welcome to module 3 of your course. The virtual clinic is a great exposure to what you will experience in a real practice. I am fortunate to teach you modules 3 and 4.

I have been in private practice for well over 18 years and have experienced many interesting cases. I am going to share some of those with you, all cases in this segment are actual.

Module 3 in this course is without doubt going to be the most challenging when it comes to critical thinking. As you will see there is no straight forward case, they are all intertwined with all sorts of complications and conditions. Your job is to figure out the puzzle and put it back together. There is no one way of practicing nutrition, your approach might be different than mine, as long as we get to a mutual end result.

With every case we will have weekly open discussion boards (watercooler), so you can pick my brain on the case, ask questions and request some guidance. I will provide you with the tools, you would however need to finish the project. Be sure to use the “Ask your questions here” frequently, we will use it as our meeting place to discuss these cases. Please know that these cases need to be chatted about, I’ll be very active in guiding you in these conversations so play your part – ASK QUESTIONS. I will give no answers but very good guidance.

In addition to the cases provided, here is a pdf document containing some more case information: Download ubvc case studies 1.pdf

Three case studies are in there:

    1. Michael Gastric Bypass
    2. Bill F. Thyroidectomy
    3. Melissa - PCOS

You will quickly learn that in practice not all information is provided, due to the fact that we cannot do bloodwork ourselves, we sometimes have to rely on documentation given to us. With this information we then need to strategize our investigations further, by formulating questions to the client. You do not have access to the client in these cases, however I will provide you with answers that you would have posed to client, since I have worked with all of them.

Make sure you communicate with me throughout this course, your questions, investigations, research are all going to form part of your end result and grade. There is no such thing as a bad question, the bad would be not asking it.

It is recommended you look at all the review videos provided, to refresh your memory on the pathophysiology of certain conditions.

I look forward in working with all of you and I know this will be a great learning experience.

Regards

Prof OC
